TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION THERAPY (TMS)

TMS THERAPY FOR DEPRESSION IN
ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND

For patients who have tried antidepressant medication without success, a series of TMS treatments can greatly improve mood regulation. TMS helps to improve Depression, Anxiety, OCD, PTSD and Bipolar.

Of the 16 million Americans suffering from Depression, some 25% will experience little to no success with antidepressants, and psychotherapy may take years to achieve the success of TMS!

EFFECTIVE TMS TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION!

TMS therapy uses a magnetic coil to generate a magnetic field and gentle currents for brain stimulation. TMS helps to reduce symptoms caused by treatment resistant conditions.

TMS Improves Depression, Anxiety, OCD, PTSD and Bipolar symptoms. The treatment works best when conducted in a series of TMS sessions using a repetitive magnetic pulse.

ABOUT TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION

After receiving FDA clearance in 2008, TMS has demonstrated its safety and efficacy for treating treatment-resistant depression. TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technology that uses electromagnetic induction.

TMS targets parts of the brain that regulate emotion and mood in patients due to “frozen” or “sluggish” nerve cells in the pre-frontal cortex. TMS magnetic fields produce electrical currents that stimulate or waken these nerve cells.  TMS therapy has the potential to normalize your brain chemistry, resulting in a positive effect on your mood.

WHAT DOES THE TMS
DEVICE LOOK LIKE?

While TMS does share some features with MRI technology, the TMS device does not look like an MRI machine. MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a test that obtains high quality images of deep body tissues without using dangerous radiation.

One of the downsides of getting an MRI is that the patient must enter a narrow tube, which can be uncomfortable for claustrophobic patients. While MRI and TMS share some things in common, such as the use of magnetic fields, TMS is a more pleasant procedure, where you can sit in a comfortable chair without feeling confined.

There are different types of TMS equipment, depending on the manufacturer and the type of brain activity and brain regions being treated. Many TMS machines include a coil device that sits above your head, while you wear a comfortable cap. The treatment is easy and well tolerated by patients.

WHY TMS?

TMS generates small currents at the precise location where they are needed, using magnetic induction technology. The patient can be awake during TMS, as gentle currents work to improve functioning in the prefrontal cortex with respect to mood and mental health.

Patients enjoy feeling better after a TMS session, experiencing a reduction in symptoms. TMS is a safe and effective way to feel better, with better mental health.

A patient can leave the office immediately following a TMS session and resume normal daily activities. Most patients report no side effects or only minor discomfort after TMS, and treatment sessions may help patients reduce or eliminate their symptoms. The outcome: 83% of people experience improvements, 62% achieve complete remission from their depression.

DOES TMS THERAPY COST A LOT OF MONEY?

Fortunately, TMS therapy is covered by most health insurance plans, for approved conditions. We must also consider the cost of not treating these conditions.

People who suffer from these conditions often take time off from work and are not able to reach their full potential. Family life suffers with long-term symptoms. TMS therapy is a non-invasive therapy that is safe, and it does not carry the risk of adverse reactions that can occur with long-term use of antidepressant medications.

Patients who learn more about TMS and the potential for improved symptoms often decide to make transcranial magnetic stimulation a priority. While returning to normal activity is priceless, TMS is affordable, and is covered by most insurance, depending on the condition.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR TMS TO WORK?

While some patients notice improvements in mood and symptoms within a short time period, it can take a few days or weeks before the effects are noticeable. In fact, family members may be aware of symptom improvements before the patient is aware that they are functioning better.

Combination treatments are more likely to result in faster improvements. For example, if TMS is combined with ketamine infusion therapy, treatment response and symptom improvement may occur much sooner.

Patients who suffer from severe Depression, Anxiety, OCD, PTSD and Bipolar, particularly severe treatment-resistant conditions, may want to consider combined TMS and Ketamine treatment. TMS and IV ketamine work well together.

IS TMS HARMFUL?

Patients often ask if TMS can be dangerous and if it can cause brain damage or make symptoms worse. TMS is a safe and effective treatment that is approved by the FDA for certain conditions.

The effects of magnetic stimulation, using magnetic induction, are safe, and not damaging to the brain. The strength of the magnetic field is similar to an MRI, and just as safe.

For patients concerned about the risks of TMS, they may want to consider the risks associated with other common Depression, Anxiety, OCD, PTSD and Bipolar treatments. Doctors often prescribe antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, and even anti-seizure medications for these conditions.

Psychiatric medications can have significant side effects and long-term adverse reactions. Many patients suffer from chronic conditions caused by medications, known as iatrogenic injuries.

Experts are now recommending that doctors prescribe less psychiatric medications because of the dangers of using medications that alter the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, and alter the functioning of neurotransmitter receptors. TMS is safer than psychiatric medications, and it can be more effective.

TMS uses low energy currents to promote neurogenesis, essentially repairing the brain, improving brain development, and improving connections between neurons.
