Intramuscular injections offer some benefits over other types of delivery methods, such as oral, and subcutaneous injections into fatty tissue under the skin. Intramuscular injections have other advantages too. The muscles have a plentiful supply of blood, which helps ensure that the body absorbs the medication quickly. The tissue in the muscles can also hold more medication than fatty tissue.
KETAMINE INTRAMUSCULAR (IM) INJECTIONS
This is a single shot of Ketamine that is injected into your muscles. Similar to an IV infusion, the medication makes its way into the bloodstream. Unlike IV infusions, IM injections are unable to be adjusted; they are however quick and easier than IV Infusions. Following the successful improvement of symptoms, patients would then return as needed for single “booster” injections.
Studies have shown that ketamine (an antagonist of NMDA receptors), represents a promising alternative in the treatment of depression. The therapeutic use of Ketamine IM, commonly used in a single injection. IM’s use has been shown to be effective in treating depression and suicide risk, and with minimal side effects.
KETAMINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY (KAP)
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a new and specialized form of therapy that takes place after your ketamine treatment. It involves psychotherapists who have experience with and knowledge about ketamine and its effects on the brain. It is recommended to have a mental health provider navigate your journey after your ketamine treatment session. We provide this service with your own therapist, or at an additional charge with one of our trusted providers in our office.
